surround sound in linux?

I have surround speakers for my computer. I go through all the settings in alsamixer and it looks like surround should be working but it don't. I have a CMedia onboard soundcard, linux sees it as a Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0) which is fine because sound does work. My soundcard converts the mic and line out into speaker outs for surround. Anyone know how to get it working? Just a note, it does work in windows, just so you know it does work.

It appears as if the linux sound driver that you are using has been designed to support only the basic features of the sound card that you are using, and that the surround sound is not one of those basic features. Maybe, CMedia (the sound card manufacturer) has a driver to either supplement or replace your linux sound driver and that driver would give you the surround sound.
