Support for webcam Creative Video IM Pro, usb ID 041e:4055 and the M560X project

I'm trying to get my Creative Video IM Pro working under Ubuntu, although this is not just a Ubuntu problem. I've collected a lot of information about the problem but not enough to find a solution.

The USB ID of the device is 041e:4055 (as revealed by lsusb). The online list of supported webcams lists several versions of the IM Pro, but not the one with this USB ID. Apparently it uses the Ali M560x chip and there's a project at Sourceforge that's been around for a couple of years to produce a driver for this chip and presumably get it included in the Linux kernels eventually. But the project descriptions are pretty cryptic for someone who is not an active developer.

I tried a somewhat unusual workaround: running Windows under VirtualBox under Linux. The device is recognized there and Creative provides a driver for it, which I've installed. I even got the light on the device to light up in that environment. But when I actually try to look at an image, the light goes out and eventually the display program hangs up.

Is there any hope of getting this bugger to work under Linux? Apparently problems with webcams under Linux are pretty common and quite aggravating for people who have laptops with built-in webcams.

hmm yes looks a toughie..

try installing a vanilla kernel....the latter the better....or ubuntu kernel source....I do not use ubuntu but you will need a kernel to recompile so read your dox on how to do that....and see this link which changes to file before you re-compile it to try and trick the module that you are going to build.!_Cam_Video_IM

good luck
