I have numerous dual Opteron 248's, single core, running in 64-bit mode with CentOS 6.x. I would like to purchases some of the many chips on eBay that are Opteron 275's, dual core, that are said by the manual to be part of the 200 series although the voltages are higher. My goal is a faster server with more memory. The 275's can handle DDR400.

Am I missing anything on this? The -i allows me to add my own 3Ware 9550SXU RAID controller at full speed.

Both are Socket 940 parts, so it Should Just Work (tm). I had a bad experience once putting quad-core Opterons on a SuperMicro server motherboard that originally came with dual-core. Make sure you update the BIOS to latest. After installing the CPU and memory and RAID, run memtest over night to check it out. Most likely it will be fine.

I have 7 servers all running dual 248's and at the time of the purchase I was naive and the seller didn't educate me. I would have spent more then.

As I see it the Opteron 275 is a socket 940 dual core running at 2.2GHz, the sam4e as the 248. With the upgrade gives the ability to use more RAM - up to 32MB of DDR400. These servers are used to serve Virtuozzo and I see this as a plus.

Now then, I see different breeds of the 275. Some are for notebooks, some are not. The cases are 1U SuperMicro's. Would I still use the full size 275 and is there a place for me to get the part number for accuracy? These chips are all over eBay cheap and I'd like to take advantage of this.

Your help is gratefully acknowledged. I am not a super Linux guru by any stretch.

I'm sorry for asking so many questions. I was told that this is the place to come, ask, and learn. Eventually one can help others. I believe that I can make these servers fly just with some upgrades.

I bought my servers pre-built and I just noticed that as a dual processor system with 8GB of RAM all of the RAM is in the slots for CPU1. Does that mean that CPU2 isn't allocated any memory?

I am told that the CPU's need to be a "matched pair." Is this true or more of a wives tail? I mean as long as the speed and stepping match, right? I'm guessing because I don't know. I got a batch of "matched pairs" from eBay and none seem to match :(
