Suffering Aureal 8830 Sound Card Owner, Red Hat 8, Tried Everything

I wouldn't be suprised if you've heard this problem a thousand times over but I have tried everything I can find out about the problems with getting this card to run under linux. I won't lie i'm new to linux but pretty adept but I really am fed-up now. I want to listen to my collection of Billy Bragg mp3's, you don't want me to reinstall windows to do that, do you? :tisk:

Can anyone please please help me?

I've tried the Aureal Vortex Linux Driver, installed gcc and related components but it still doesn't want to install. I've included the garble it spits out when I do a make install, if it will help anyone. One thing I havn't tried is to re-build/build sound support into the kernel, can anyone assist me in seeing if sound support is built into the kernel and how to if it isn't

Sorry to be of any trouble but im desperate.

Cheers in advance, Jim

well, i cant offer any help.... but i can offer support! :-P im in the same boat... with the 8820

I did as much research as I could, found the only drivers that were *supposed* to work... and no luck... the make fails with errors.. and oviously, then the make install fails also...

i've got a diamond sound card with the vortex chipset, so it *should* work.. but nope

i did however, get diff errors than you... i unfortunately cant paste them because im at work :-P when i get home i'll run the make again (think i still have the source at home) and copy the output here.. maybe i'll get an answer too :-P

anyway, my solution was to just switch out to another sound card in another machine thats runnin windoze... because i figure it'll be easier to get that card workin in win.. but i gotta check which machine im gonna switch it for... lol... i was originally gonna gank mom, but its a god damn emachines with sound built into the board, so i have to go to the basement and rummage through my old machines and see if i can find somethin thats not ISA... (HA! GOOD LUCK! in my basement anyway....)

Not sure if this will help or if you have already been there but here's an Aureal Forum

Project: Linux Aureal Driver: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=25250

Plus driver download: http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...lease_id=20020

Hope this helps

Pete
