Sucess... Radeon drivers and mandrake
Yes it has been a difficult 3 days for this "Newbie".
Getting the latest ati drivers to work on my kt400 chipset motherboard under xfree4.2 was a waste of time.
Using an AGP patch I found for 2.5.1 drivers and following the advice on this site

I was up and running in 30 minutes.
Man, those mesa toys fly on an accelerated 9500 under Linux!!!
I was not able to list the site.
