Striping Raid
 

Hi all

Does having striping raid make the data faster to access?
and if you have 2 ide channels would there be any point in having drives on the slaves?
as I think you can only write to master of slave and not at the same time:Pengy:

By "striping raid", do you mean raid1? If so, it offers good read speeds while write speeds are slightly slower than a single disk.

Stripeing is raid 0...raid 1 is mirroring.
Raid 0 offers better speed and access times but no security.Mirroring offers no speed difference or access time differences but securely mirrors the other drives data.

Accessing times are not better with RAID 0. RAID 0 (stripping) only improves the read and write throughput in megabytes per second. If you use RAID 1 (mirroring), the accessing times are improve when accessing two or more files although the accessing times of hard drive does not change. If you use four drives in a RAID 1, it can access four files at once, but the write performance will be as good as one drive. RAID 0 is serial because it can only access one file at a time while RAID 1 is parallel that can access multiple files depending on the amount of drives.

In order to get good performance with RAID using IDE. You have to place one hard drive on the primary channel and another on the secondary channel. In simpler terms, each IDE connector on the controller can only be connected to one hard drive to get good performance with RAID. If the controller contains for IDE connectors, you can use four hard drives.

If I have raid 0 it will have faster read speeds and if I have raid 1 it will have more reliabilty
