strange video card crash

I have an athlon 1900+ on an asus motherboard running Debian unstable and 2.6.2. My video card is an nvidia 5200fx with 256 MB Ram. It is hooked up to an lcd monitor through the digital out (if that matters). The problem is this: whenever I leave the computer on for a long (>1 hr) time without touching it (i.e. no activity but programs still open and kde still running) the monitor invariably says when I come back "no signal". Also, when I play a 3d game (America's Army), there is about a 50% chance that this failure will occur as I play the game, at any time. Now I know the computer isn't crashing because even after the video fails I can still ssh in and shut the computer down/do whatever. However, the sound from the game also stops working when the video stops. My sound card is via8233 onboard audio. There are some quirks too, when I left a dvd paused for > 3 hrs it did not crash, whereas any other time that would have been guaranteed. Also, I believe the entire x-server is going down because I've tried navigating blind with the keyboard and though I hit the right combo of keys that should turn the comp off, it does nothing. Unfortunately, I cannot find any errors logged anywhere.
