Strange noise from the spreakers (Ensoniq / ES1371 sound card and Fedora Core 2)

The subject is not referring to my taste for music...

First some info on yours truly. I'm a newbie in Linux world, and I'm not that interested in configuration files and all that. Unfortunatly, it seems that config files are the only way to go. I'm planning a project that is best to be built on Linux, so it seems that I have some more configuration to do... At the moment my Linux installation count for last three weeks is six installations with three different distros (SuSe, Debian, Fedora). So you probably can make a pretty good guess on my blood pressure level and the amount of foul language my poor neighbours have heard through the walls.

English is not my native language, so there may be some things I can't explain properly. If so, please ask, I usually can find a way around the hard sentences. If you can understand the purpose of my mumbling, but it is just plain funny, have a good laugh and help me just to pay it back. We'll both be happy.

At the moment I have Fedora Core 2 installed. It seems to be pretty nice distro, so I'd like to stay with it. Otherwise it seems to be working just fine, but my sound card is not working as it should. Everything seems to be OK until I log in KDE or Gnome. The result is the same for both: a humming noise from the speakers. It seems to me that the noise is some kind of interference from my display adapter, since moving the mouse or typing (like right now) causes the sound to change. Also moving pictures ( eg. animated GIFs etc.) has the same effect. It sounds a bit like a damped sound of a typewriter. And there is a low humming on the background all the time.

I've tried running alsaconf and system-config-soundcard. Both work fine, and also the guitar sample in the latter can be heard just fine (with the humming, that is).

The specs are as follows:
Sound card: Ensoniq 5880 (ES1371 chip) (There is also another sound card integrated on the motherboard, but that's not in use)
Display adapter: ATI Radeon 9000 series (9600 to be exact)

I'll attach the information mentioned in the forum FAQ.

Kernel version: 2.6.7-1.437.1.ll.rhfc2.ccrma
I installed this version because some web page suggested that this may solve the problem. The earlier version was 2.6.8-1.521

I think this is all that I think of. Any other info you might need, I'll be more than happy to post it. Please include the detailed how-to. I can always use google for how to find out required information, but it will take more time, so if it is not too much work, I'd appreciate very detailed instructions.

Thanks in advance,
Antti
