strange display with new nvidia 6600

I can not get linux to work with my new graphics card (Gigabyte nv6600). My old one (geforce 4mx) worked fine. On bootup, I get the grub loader, then pretty soon after the "Press I for interactive startup" message the screen is covered in horizontal lines. I managed to login to X (blind) and press ctrl-alt-numpadplus to switch resolutions but they are all variations of the same pattern. I booted with fedora core rescue disk to remove video card entries from the kudzu hwconf file but no joy there either. I have fedora core 3 (updated). Any ideas what can be wrong?
