strange behaviour - 2.6.20 + p5b

Hi! I have a computer with asus p5b motherboard and intel c2d e6300. I read that many users had the same problems that I had with installation the sysytem. I managed to install slackware 11 using packages on another hd, so I didn't eliminate the problem with IDE controller. But i had a system and I wanted to compile 2.6.20 kernel. I thought that newer kernel would help, but... I compiled it, added to lilo.conf and booted. Only thing I saw were strange signs. It looked like the system had been loading, but I couldn't read anything. Does anyone know what might have caused that and how I can fix it. I changed fonts and graphic options in kernel config but it didn't help. I will be very grateful for help.

Are you sure you did everything right while compiling? I don't use Slackware but my Fedora is running very well with a 2.6.20 kernel - so I doubt whether anything is wrong with either that specific kernel or your motherboard (have P5B myself). It seems more likely that you forgot to include some crucial things (modules? config?) or that something (such as X) is not properly configured.

I think I id everything well. I compiled kernel 2.6 on older configuration and it was ok. But now X weren't configured at all, I did it in text mode. Do you think it is the reason? Configuring X before compiling kernel will help?
