standby mode?

Hello, i have a small question.

is there any way to force the harddrive into standby mode in linux? i know that you are able to put the harddrive to sleep with "hdparm -S x /dev/hdx" but it allways wakes up again within the minute because of some process or another waking it up.

so i wonder if you can force it to just standby until you hit a key and then it wakes up?

i'm running slackware 10.1 on a laptop. kind of standard installation with KDE. haven't really changed anything with standard processes running and such.

the point of this is that i have a hard time sleeping with the working-sounds from the hard drive going on irregularily beside my bed

thanks in advance!
