spirit panther modem setup

I have recently installed FC3 on my computer but I am having problems with the setup of my modem.

I first tried several winmodems but that proved a bit too difficult.

I now have a Spirit Panther FM56-FT external serial modem.

It is setup on com1 and seems to function OK.

When I activate the modem it dials and connects according to the lights on the front. However I don't have a valid connection as I am unable to access any sites. I can log on via my laptop with the same logon so that means we are not realy connected.

1. How can I test the connection of the modem?

2. What is the correct sytax for a serial port test?

3. Do I require Linux drivers for the modem? I have searched for the drivers and are only able to find win drivers. All the info I can find for this modem suggests it is fine for Linux.

Thanks for your help.

Very Strange.....

The unit worked the next day.

But it is so slowwww. Download speed of 1kbs is about average.

On the windows machine it is around 4.7 kbs both are 56k modems on the same phone line.

I will post again if I cant find the answer in google.
