Speedtouch USB NEARLY working.....but not quite

Hi guys...I have just made the leap from XP Pro to Mandrake 10, and although i like what i see very much i'm having a few probs installing my Speedtouch USB modem. i've looked around the web and it seems to be a tricky bugger to get working, but after following a How-To on Sourceforge - i can't post the URL until i've got 5 posts under my belt apparently - i've got the driver installed and the pc is recognising and initialising the modem. however. when i try to manually start the connection i get this error message -

[root@localhost peers]# pppd call adsl updetach
using channel 2
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/1
Script /usr/local/sbin/pppoa3 -m 1 -c -vpi 8 -vci 35 finished (pid 4352), status = 0xff00
Modem hangup
Connection terminated.
Couldn't get channel number: Input/output error
ioctl(PPPIOCGFLAGS): Bad file descriptor

being a total n00b i don't really know what this means...any ideas anyone?

cheers,
Mat
