Unhappy Speedtouch Modem Installation Problems

Hi all, hope someone can help. I have just installed Fedora Core 2 on my m/c and am trying to install a speedtouch silver(rev.4) usb modem. I have used the speedtouchconf script with the rev4fw.zip firmware. I believe the modem is connecting as it should but i am having a problem with the DNS. I can ping an ip but get "unknown host" whenever i enter a web address. Below is the output from the speedtouchconf.sh when i ran it :

No further user interaction is required.
Configuring SpeedTouch Driver...
Software Configuration - SUCCESS
Building SpeedTouch Driver...
Software Build - SUCCESS
Installing SpeedTouch Driver...
Software Installation - SUCCESS
Creating ppp files in //etc/ppp
FATAL: Module usbcore not found.

*** Configuration finished. Starting the connection ***

The modem lights should start flashing for approx. 20 seconds...
The lights should both be solid green now.
Running : pppd call adsl
inet addr:00.000.000.000 P-t-P:000.000.000.0 Mask:000.000.000.000 (edited out my ip)
Looks like we're online...
ping: unknown host (website)
Cannot ping (website) - trying steve-parker.org by numeric IP
Looks like DNS might be iffy ... sorting it out
ping: unknown host (website)
Looks like /etc/ppp/resolv.conf is wrong.
You need to check the DNS configuration.
Look in /var/log/messages to see if DNS was configured.
cat: /etc/resolv.conf: No such file or directory
cat: /etc/ppp/resolv.conf: No such file or directory
Configuration finished.
Any potential problems are listed below:
The connection is established, but there seems to be some
problem with DNS (looking up the names of internet hosts)
To automatically dial-in when the PC boots up :
chkconfig speedtouch on
Do you want to set this up now? (Yes / No)

I'm a complete newbie here but was wondering if anyone could help me out

Thanks

Is there no-one out there who can help me ?

I believe the problem is the missing resolve.conf files. Can i create these myself ? What do they consist of exactly ? I have opened my web browser and typed the ip for google and the website loaded so the net connection is definately working it seems to just be this DNS thing but how do i set it up ?

You ought to be able to create them yourself. You can get the values from friends who are using the same ISP (and service) If they are using windows, ask them to do

ipconfig /a

Code:
nameserver 123.123.123.2
nameserver 142.123.123.2
where those in italics are the ipaddresses of your DNS servers.

Code:
man resolv.conf
for more about the file's format.

Talking

Result!!!

Problem solved. Thanks very much for your help mirradric, i am currently accessing this site from my fedora installation at last. Should anyone have a similar problem i shall go through what fixed it for me.

I browsed to my /etc folder, copied (<---note: copied NOT cut) another .conf file and pasted it to my desktop. I renamed this file resolv.conf, opened it and then deleted all the existing text. I then entered the following lines as instructed by mirradric:

nameserver 194.168.4.100
nameserver 194.168.8.100

I then saved the file and closed thetext editor window. I copied the new resolv.conf file from my desktop and then pasted a copy into /etc and another copy into /etc/ppp. When i booted up mozilla and entered an address....Hey Presto! The IP addresses above for my dns servers are for Virgin ADSL.

Again i thank mirradric for his help, i'm a new member of the linux community and it's nice to see people helping the new guys.

Liam.
