Source - Sony pcgfx140 laptop monitor refresh rates

Debian's Xf86config wants the monitor refresh rates, but they appear to be set by software, and are not available at Sony support.

Redhat had no problem with this.

If this is hardware, where do I go to get the specs?
If software, what do I enter in xf86config?

Welcome to LQ. If you need to manually adjust the video settings, you can open the XF86Config file (which should be in the /etc/X11 directory) using your favorite editor. About halfway down the file you will see a section for the Monitor, and in that section will be the HorizSync and VertRefresh parameters. These parameters will be a range (such as 30 - 70 for HorizSync) but the exact settings to use will depend on the monitor you're using. I have no idea what they should be for your laptop, but perhaps the owner's manual or other resource contains them.

Alternatively, if you happened to have the settings that Redhat used, you could use plug those numbers back in, or of course you could always keep the default settings, which should be safe. In any event good luck with it -- J.W.
