Soundcard recommendation

Hello!

I mistakenly bought a brand new C-Media 8738 soundcard last week, because it said "compatible with linux" on the box. lol. I'm unable to get it to work, you can read about the problem here:

the thread about that

It seems from the lack of replies that no-one has any ideas on how to get it working. I have got sound from it using the demo 4-front OSS drivers, but I am loathed to buy a full liscence from them when I could buy a new, different, compatible soundcard off ebay for the same price!

So, unless anyone has any further ideas in that thread of what to try to get it to work, could you recommend a cheap soundcard that is, well, "plug'n'play"?

Don't need no flashy features, just stereo sound from Xmms and divX's.

Try a cheapo SoundBlaster 4.1 - available just about anywhere for about a tenner. Mine works great in Mandrake and Slackware - no configuration needed.

Before buying a new sound card, try #modprobe cmpci as root. If that works then #chmod 666 /dev/dsp and #chmod 666 /dev/mi*.
If it doesn't work, try downloading alsa.

Either option is cheaper than buying 2 sound cards.
