That's the answer to the first three your questions.

You should install xmms-1.2.10 and alsa-*-1.09. These're the latest versions. It really can be a bug which was solved in next version.
If you installed alsa, reran "alsaconf", your kernel module are o.k., then it should work. It always worked for me.
If it doesn't work for you, I don't know what to do.
Try a better and newer distro...

Now I am getting the very good audio.....
