soundcard/mixer problem

I recently installed Mandrake8.1. It tells me that it recognises my soundblaster live card, but kmix says "invalid mixer 'SigmaTel STAC9721/23' " and gives me no controls. I sometimes have sound, it seems to be quite erratic. I'm new to all this so I don't know where to start, all help appreciated

Maybe try first from console mp3 players. Do they give sound? Look in /var/log/messages for errors
