Soundcard detection problem HELP!

hello everyone,

My sound card is getting detected but the problem is my sound card is from via chipset VT8235 AC97 Audio Contoller but linux detects it as VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller ,will this be the reason why i can't hear any sound.i am running on redhat linux 9.0..if that is the reason how can i manually change the sound card driver?if not what else might be the problem?

Any help will be deeply appreciated,and please try to be a little elobrate 'cause i am a total newbie to linux.

Just out of curiosity... can you adjust the volume at all? Also, what happens if you login as root? Can you hear sounds then?

Even in the root it does not work,the problem is the same there is no sound coming when we run the test sound.yes i can adjust the volume bar they are not muted checked everything in that area. do you have any idea how do we uninstall the driver.so i can instal a new driver......

I have the same codec and you have to unmute one of the VIA DXS channels to make the sound come out. Some mixers don't display this setting, but alsamixer will.
