Soundcard being used by... something...

Hi, I am fairly new with linux and so I don't know much. I got my hands on Suse 8.2 and a copy of Lindows. I dumped Lindows quickly but I actually like Suse... Call me ignorant but it works pretty well, better then windows every did.

I have a had some rough going....trying to get my system to dual boot my win xp and Linux.... I had one or two devistating experiences but thats all in the past.

Throughout that, I had Suse up and running 4 different times. Each time reinstalling from scratch. This last time however has left me with a sound problem. The soundcard seems to be all set, I have the start sounds upon entering the desktop....yast says the sound card is all set. However, no other program can use sound.

When I look at the soundcard settings through yast It says that its running.

Whats running?

Now here is where it gets good. If I delete the configured soundcard, then add it back and configure it....I can use it with any program and have sound.

When I click on delete I get a little message that states there are programs using the soundcard and they will have to be closed to continue. I just click yes and its done.

I want to know what is running....
I want to Kill whatever it is that is running....

It takes about 1 1/2 min to correct this problem, every time I start the comp, log in from a diff user, etc.. The thing is several the rest of my family uses the comp too, and I don't feel like trusting them with my root password, then coaching them through the whole process...

Who can tell me how to fix this?

What other programs are you trying to use? Not sure about SuSE, but my KDE sound configuration can be set to run the artsd sound daemon at startup. Unfortunately this is not compatible with some popular apps, like xmms and mplayer, which just stay silent, although the command line mpg123 is OK. You can switch it off in the Control Centre, or just 'killall artsd'. Maybe running the sound card config also shuts down artsd.

To see what else is running use command 'ps aux' and look for artsd or some other sound related app in the output.

Thanks maroonbaboon!

I went into the control panel and set arts sound server to not to load on KDE startup. Sure enough, that fixed my little red wagon. Thanks so much. That has been driving me crazy for 3 weeks now.

Hi, in my Fedora core 3, there is some problem in sound card. In gnome its work fine. But in kde its doesn't. When i logged in through kde sound doesn't come but when i go for sound card detection it takes more than 3 minutes to detect the sound card. But after this sound comes but very slow and it comes after 2 second of the even. If i logged out and enter through gnome same problem prevails in gnome until i reboot the system. What should I do?
