Soundcard

I am completely new to linux so please be gentle. I am using Mandrake 9.2 and I can't get my soundcard working. It is quite puzzling to me, whenever I play a game I have sound. But when I try to play an MP3 or test my speakers, I have no sound. Does anyone have a solution to my problem? Thanks in advance!

Try increasing sound in "aumix" or "alsamixer"

Those are console based sound mixers for Linux.
