SoundBlaster Live noise/distortion

I have a SoundBlaster Live PCI card configured as emu10k1 to run under ALSA on a Slackware 9.1 installation. It seems to be functioning nominally and I am able to successfully load a soundfont into it, but when I play MIDI through it using KMID (or any other MIDI capable program) the sound is badly distorted/noisy. I have tried adjusting the levels in alsamixer (including tone, bass, and treble controls) but to no avail. Any ideas?
