I have no sound on my Mandrake 9.1 system. Here are some results:
[root@Jade jay]# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ALi Corporation M1541 (rev 04)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ALi Corporation M1541 PCI to AGP Controller (rev 04)
00:07.0 ISA bridge: ALi Corporation M1533 PCI to ISA Bridge [Aladdin IV] (rev c3)
00:0f.0 IDE interface: ALi Corporation M5229 IDE (rev c1)
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE] (rev 16)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 86C326 5598/6326 (rev c3)

#sndconfig gives me this in the end:
/lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o.gz: ?
? init_module: No such device ?
? modprobe: insmod ?
? /lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/sb.o.gz failed ?
? modprobe: insmod sound-slot-0 failed

I know I have a Creative Soundblaster Live card. I had this working before I re-installed Mandrake. I just don't remember what I did. I promise to remember this time if you can help me again.

Try this: go into kmix and disable "IEC958 Optical Raw". (It may be in the "advanced" section.) This fixed the problem for me, after several distrobutions, installations and lost hairs. :-) Good luck!

Just check whether alsa modules are loaded. ->lsmod

if you don't have ALSA drivers, i suggest you to download it. You need: alsa-driver,alsa-lib, alsa-kernel, alsa-tools or something like this (check it at alsa-project.org)
also do:

alsactl power -> to check sound card status
do: alsaconf ->to auto detect card
then: alsamixer -c 1 -> to adjust sound cards. You need to unmute some parts, and diable AC97 (i think)

if this doesn't work,then
check /dev/dsp if exists
if you have on board sound card i suggest you to disable it via BIOS, you could have conflict
Note: check your /proc/interrupts -> could cause some problems
