Soundblaster disabled in RH8.0 - why?
Hello all, newbie time...installed RedHat 8 not probs at all, except Soundcard config shows 2 sound devices, both disabled, on of which is my Soundblaster Live! card. It gives you a "test" button, both don't work (obviously), but I have no idea how to "enable" my soundcard...any one tell me how it's done please?
Thanks in advance,
Gryfon

I had a problem like this with my Audigy.
If you have a webcam installed, unplug it....
Your soundcard gets detected but it defaults to the webcam automatticly. This can also happen if you have any other multimedia equipment that has sound inputs (as a webcam records sound through its MIC port)

I like you're thinking...
...but I don't have a webcam. I think it must be that my Asus motherboard some sort of built-on sound and that both that and my Soundblaster are being picked up by Linux, so both show as "disabled" when using the "Soundcard Detection" program. Problem is - how to "enable" one, or delete the onboard one so that perhaps detection just configs the Soundblaster instead... I think I'll play with the BIOS first. Any other suggestions?

definitely try to disable in the bios first. Linux should not detect it anymore then... if not.. you might need to reinstall.
also i believe you enable the modules in /etc/modules.conf or some .conf file (forgetful at the moment lol)

Have diasable on-board sound. Now Souncard Detector program shows only Soundblaster - still disabled! Reformated and reinstalled....still the same. I've seen a guide on Redhat website that says to manually add lines in to the modules.conf, but the file is "read only" (don't know how to get around that) and surely with plug n play that should not be necessary?

modules.conf shouldn't be read only as long as you are logged on as root

(Sigh)...U guys R great, it's just me. Edited in extra lines as suggested on RH website...no effect whatsoever. If the soundcard config program can detect the card, why is it disabled ? Must be some way to enable it. The audio volume program also refuses to boot, citing "kernal must have audio support" and "must have permission to access /dev/mixer". I assume I have OK kernal, so how to boot into Gnome environment as super user (perhaps?)

Hi
try (as root) ;
chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer
to get around the permissions problem
good luck

Gave that a try...no difference made though. Same error message occurs. Also when shutting down a "[FAILED]" parameter shows saying
"modprobe can't locate sound-service-0-0"
Sounds like that has something to do with. Weird how the systems recognises the card but won't use it. Any other suggestions? I'ld love to get this licked!

can you post your /etc/modules.conf
and do cat /proc/pci and post the part concerning your
multimedia audio controller.
And take a look in what cat /proc/pci spits out just to check by
yourself if any used resources conflict with eachother
check also in your bios for; pnp OS installed (plug and play)
have that set to no. Maybe reset the pnp if there is such an
option in your bios.
regards
