Sound works perfect but no aux-in

hello!
i've been on linux now for the past few days and everythings worked perfect so far.
I wanted to make full use of my sound blaster audigy card with the front panel inputs such as microphone, optical, spdif, midi.. etc, but especially the auxillary inputs.
My sound works fine like i said before so i can play mp3s in winamp and hear the startup sound of kde, but i'm not sure where to change the aux volume. i looked in kmix and played around with all the volumes and i know none of them affect the aux volume now.
next i looked around on this forum and got lost in all the posts involving audigy cards.
i found people using the alsamixer command to change thier volumes but when i run it in a root terminal it always says:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

i'm sure i installed all the libraries and other packages involved with the alsa mixer but every time i try that command or amixer, No Such File or Directory..
Sorry to ask this question again if its already been answered but i looked through these forums for a very long time and found nothing that helped.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated!

Thanks, mike

gatblast45; in ur post there is phrase within alsamixer : function snd_ctl_open failed for default; that may refer to that input connection as being opened (ie no connection available) to complete circuit. check that out. just maybe loose (resolder or tighten) input conection at front panel.

wow mr penguin you must be a genius because i slid off the case and checked the card connection and it didnt even feel like it was loose but i turned back on the comp and booted up ol mandrake and there were like 20 more options added to kmix.... hmmm
well thats probably the stupidest question of the day but at least somebody answered it! thanks :-D

gatblast45; thank you for compliment but no genuis just and old tv tech paying attention to problems overlooked. any indications of open are redflags for me . opencircuits red flags danger danger possiblity of shortcircuit to occur. lol thank again glad to solve and help u r welcomed!
