sound with kernel 2.6.22

I have the following problem:
I have a box with Fedora 8 (kernel 2.6.23..) which recognizes the sound driver (HDA-Intel)
When I compile kernel 2.6.22 i get no sound
/proc/asound/cards does not show any.
I think i check out all the right ones when compiling the kernel.
Still, how shall i approach the problem?

You can compile the latest alsa drivers.

Download the drivers from alsa website, then find the installation instructions for your card here:

It helped in my case.
