Sound too quiet with new card

OK, I've cranked the volume on everything to the maximum in alsamixer, I've turned up my speakers as loud as I can, and it's still only "moderately quiet". When I plug the headphones in to the headphone port of the card, I can't hear anything at all. How do I fix this?

Have you tried adjusting the OSS mixer?

Try 'aumix'

Oops... plugging things in to the appropriate output jack helps a lot. *facepalm*

Ha!! I've got to say this post made me laugh out loud.

Congrats on solving the problem, oot. I had a similar experience once when trying to get my network connection going, and maybe if I had simply noticed that, oh, I don't know, if the CAT-5 cable is actually plugged into the NIC, things might work a little better That little incident caused a lot of desk-kicking, that's for sure. -- J.W.
