Sound Problems On Ubuntu

Hello all. i am using an Alienaware laptop. I had troubles getting windows to install again after my system messed up, so i have been using Ubuntu 7.0.4 since. It has been running really nice. The only problem im having is getting my sound to work. I pretty sure that i am using a realtek sound card, but not sure of the model # or anything else. When i go into sounds, for Sound Playback it says OSS _ Open Sound System. When i click on Test i egt the following error message.

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not negotiate format\

Under Default Mixer Types, for Device it says Reaktek ALC880 (OSS Mixer)

Hi tyfobpo, Here is your sound card.

Have you tried alsamixer from a terminal? Try setting the card up using alsa. You might also want to post the output from
Code:
/sbin/lsmod
so that we can see if the modules are loaded.
Good luck, ;-)

Try running alsaconf first and choose the intel sound card, then try your mixers. If that doesn't get it, try changing the OSS setting to alsa, then try your mixers. It looks like all the modules are loaded and the card is recognized, so it should be a matter of getting the settings right, such as mixer volumes, which sound system to use, etc. I'm going to try and google up some .asoundrc file settings for the card.
Good luck. ;-)

You "soundcard" belongs to the HDA-Intel group. You find the Ubunto howto for making it work here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

Helped me get my ALC883 (another HDA-Intel compatible) up and running on Ubuntu 7.04 with latest ALSA 1.0.15rc2.
