sound problems (cd only)

Can't get my sound fully working, only cd's will play nothing else

via82cxxx_audio 20376 0
ac97_codec 10984 0 [via82cxxx_audio]
soundcore 3652 2 [via82cxxx_audio]

those are the modules loaded, is there something else i have to do???doesn't work as root either and my /dev/dsp, /dev/mixer are both set at 666. Any help would be great

When i open up XMMS and try to play a MP3 it just sits there not moving or anything.

thanks

Sounds like the MP3 plugin for XMMS isn't installed or isn't the right one. Have you tried playing wav's? Have you made sure your mixer levels are all up?

Check your plugin options and enable them all in XMMS. I'm not at my Slackbox right now so I can't remember the exact way to get to options, but I know you can right click XMMS open window, then select either Options or Plugins>Options. In here, you can choose which I/O plugins to enable. I would enable all of them. You can also choose your visualization plugins and other plugins as well. Oh yeah, make sure your volume levels are up too. Hope this helps.

is it redhat 8? if it is then you should install a rpm to hear mp3s, you will get the rpm free from www.xmms.org

Ok, i guess the via module just doesnt work right...i been searching around and everywhere points to ALSA for my onboard sound. I have been using ALSA ever since i started linux in december and its been working perfect. That was the easy way out when i started and figured to give the kernel drivers a try today but no luck.

thanks
