Sound problems
 

Hello all, i got a sound problem.
When i try to use 2 or more application that uses sound, only the first actually succeed in using the sound device.
I dunno what is causing this.
Maybe my audio card does not support hardware mixing?
I have Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03).

And i dunno if it support or not hardware mixing.
If it support it, then, what should i do to configure it?
If it does not support it, then can someone please tell me how to set up and configure step to step (or send me to somewhere i can find that) an arts or other daemons like that ?
I am using Debian SID, currently upgraded with fluxbox on it.

Yeah, the integrated AC '97 driver doesn't support hardware mixing at all (in fact, I'm not entirely certain the cards actually have hardware mixing). You can set up some kind of mixer like the arts daemon to take care of this in software. Its easiest to set up if you're running KDE because its in the control center under 'sound system.' If you don't have KDE, I think you can just run the arts daemon by running the command 'artsd' but I think you may have to specify some command-line options too. You'll also have to apt-get install 'arts' and its dependencies if you don't have KDE. Check out http://www.arts-project.org for more info if you have to do it this way. Some programs let you change the audio device output used to arts, but others insist on trying to take over the sound card (since you don't have mixing.) Any of these should be run with the command 'artsdsp programname' which reroutes their audio output. There's probably some way to set it up so all programs are automatically run this way, but I'm not guru enough.

It's seriously much easier to just buy a well-supported dedicated sound card like a soundblaster live value. I think there's even a noticeable audio quality difference.

I installed FC 2 with Kernel 2.6.8-1.358. First time getting experience with FC 2 was surprising me. It's very cool. But the problem began when I tried to play XMMS, RealPlayer, Noatun, there is no sound output. (no problem in Redhat 7.3)

The solution to your problem is to use aRts with every application that can output that way.

I think if you run alsamixer you may find that your sound is muted, and please don't hijack threads.
