Sound problems

Hello I have a gigabyte k7 triton running mandrake 9.2. Sound works okay the first time i log into X, but if I log out and log back in it doesent work. I have found that changing the permissions to 777 for all files in the /dev/sound directory solves the problem but I have to do it every time i reboot. Also i cant seem to get my mic to work, any tricks there?

I don't know what sound card the Gigabyte K7 uses but you should be able to add yourself to the group that owns /dev/sound so you don't have to change the permissions every time you boot. This group is often called "audio", but check what group owns the sound devices on your system (ls -l will list owner and group).

Open up /etc/group (as root, of course) in your favorite text editor and find the line corresponding to your sound group name. It might look like this:
Code:
audio:x:29:
Add your login name after the last colon character. You can have a comma-separated list there, so if we're adding the "hw" and "capheind" users we would edit the line to look like this:
Code:
audio:x:29:hw,capheind
Save the file, and log out. Log in again and you should be able to play sounds as yourself without having to change any permissions.

Håkan
