Do u have alsa installed?? ( if not install it )
Is the modules loaded?? (try /sbin/lsmod )
To get alsa to probe your card and edit /etc/modules.conf use command alsaconf as root, then run alsamixer and change the settings and exit.
To save your settings done in alsamixer type 'alsactl store'
