Sound problem in Redhat 8.0
 

I'm fairly new to linux, but I'm having trouble getting my sound to work. The best I know about my soundcard is that it's vendor is Rockwell international. I believe it's a conexant Audio soundcard. I found a supposed driver for it, downloaded it and installed it, but still no sound. Any help would be great...

Jamie, I need a little more information about your box. I.E. The distro. You may need to pull the card and examine it for more information. Also is this an ISA, PCI, or on board card. A good place to start is http://www.alsa-project.org/ it is a great site for all the hard to fix sound problems. I am running Slackware 8.1 with some onboard sound and that site solved all of my problems. You might want to search the boards here at this site too. I know there are tons of sound questions asked. I'm not really familiar with most of that....but that's the part I think is significant to the sound card. I'm going to open up and check the soundcard right now to see if I can get some more info. But I'm running Redhat 8.0 with Kernel version 2.4.18-17.8.0 ... more info to come if I find it.

Another little update.....I opened up the case and checked out the card.....from what I gather my modem and sound card are on one card. It's a PCI card and has a chip on it that says Conexant Riptide (tm) Racc010 ...That's about the best I got out of looking at it. I don't know if any of this helps, but there it is...

Jamie, I have never seen a modem/sound card all bundled into one. I might be wrong but I do not think that they do that. The most likely scenerio is that you have "on board" sound. That would mean that your sound card is integrated with the motherbord. And as far as that goes, all I can say is ALSA. Well if someone has seen that type of combo card that Jamie is talking about let me know. ;)

Rockwell Riptide Combo Modem and Sound cards...

Yes those exist, I work for HP and we threw many of those odd things in our 98se models. Best of luck with that, I'm still trying to get my 'mainstream' soundblaster working...

Well, it's an HP computer and in windows device manager it says it's a riptide audio device, so that probably explains it. I didn't think it was onboard sound being that I plug my speakers into the pci card. Anyways....if anyone else has any ideas please let me know. I'm still working on it...
