Sound prob-OSS driver-pops and no volume control

Like the subject says, I am having problems with my sound. This is the onboard sound on a M7VIG pro, Biostar's website says the integrated audio is "C-MediaCMI9739A 6-Channel AC'97 CODEC" I don't really have a free pci slot to add a sound card. (Unless, is it ok to use a pci slot, if the card will be almost flush with the fan on my Nvidia TNT2 card?) When I play sound through xmms or through mplayer or xine, I hear periodic pops and clicks, and the volume controls in neither xine nor xmms work. In xine, the output plugin is set to OSS driver 1.2.6. I don't know what else to include here, but here are I think the relevant lines from lsmod pci:

#lsmod pci
Module Size Used by Tainted: P
snd-pcm-oss 45152 0 (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss 11136 1 (autoclean)
snd-via8233 6084 1
snd-pcm 58528 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-via8233]
snd-timer 11456 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec 24196 0 [snd-via8233]
snd 31720 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-via8233 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec]
soundcore 3268 3 [snd]

When I set the output plugin in xmms to Alsa 0.9, I get this error in the xterm: "ALSA lib pcm.c:1613:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM surround40 definition (id: surround40, value: cards.pcm.surround40)"

Hmmm. Well umm, xmms seems to work great with eSound output plugin 1.2.6. How do I set Xine to use this also?
