Question Sound only plays from one app at a time

I can only seem to play audio from one source at a time. So if I am playing some music on XMMS and I get a message on GAIM I won't hear the sound chime from GAIM. If I want to play some Quake 3 or Unreal 2004, I can't play music from XMMS or hear sound chimes from GAIM.

I am using ALSA on Linux kernel 2.6.11.10. I do have the snd_intel8x0 and snd_ac97_codec modules loaded. I integrated the mixer_oss and pcm_oss into the kernel. I checked /dev/sound and I do have mixer and pcm. From my guess I am assuming something is wrong with my mixer or else something related to it.

I have ran alsoconf and it did not help. I also tried tweaking how the sound is produced from XMMS and GAIM without success. The funny thing is if I have XMMS playing I can't even get GAIM to console beep... does the console beep go through ALSA?

I have a SIS chipset motherboard with onboard/integrated cmedia ac97 audio. Specifically I have a MSI NEO FISR 655 Max, if you want or need more specs on the audio I can provide more, but my sound driver probably isn't the issue.

Any suggestions, ideas, help, etc... would be great. I am running out of my own and have been furiously google-ing every possible key term and thought that has come to my mind regarding the situation.

Thanks!

also something else weird and probably related....

When I run alsamixer alot of my controls won't let me increase the volume and there is no number on the bottom. These aren't some obscure sound controls either... things like Master and PCM I can't control!

I have been reading alot of material relating this to an issue with my sound card not supporting hardware volume control or hardware mixing... it works in windows, so unless windows uses software based volume control and mixing it shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry about the wasted post, I got my own question answered...

I guess windows does everything in software: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc...module=Generic

Kind of annoying, oh well.

For those of you who want to get this to work I guess we have to use a software mixer to alleviate the lack hardware mixing. I think they recommend dmix?

Just a note for the future. You need to mention what Linux distribution and version you are using when you ask a question. Its probably a good idea to put it in your profile.
