Sound on HP DV2000 Ubuntu 7.04

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 and when I first installed it, the audio worked fine. Ok great. After a couple of days, the audio stopped working.
I can't figure out why it stopped working. I tried searching and couldn't find a fix. I tried the alsamixer program and it showed that nothing was zero.

The card and chip are NVidia and Conexant.

Hi jwsmith00, Have you added anything, software, updates, etc.? Generally speaking when hardware just "stops working" it's usually the last thing you did. I.E. updates, patches, the last program you may have installed, have you changed locations of anyhting, speakers? Try and retrace the events leading up to the hardware failure.
Good luck. ;-)

I setup my wi-fi card. And I thought I had them both working. I seem to recall the last time I had the sound working was when I was using WEP. Then I switch to WPA and the sound stopped working. But that doesn't sound right. There couldn't be a connection there.

As for updates, I ran the Ubuntu updates and everything looked like it worked. No other changes that I recall.

Ok, I found a few things for you to try. I'm thinking one of your updates may have "broken your sound". In any event there are some suggestions here.

Good luck.

Ok, I got my sound working. The bad news is I don't know how. I just came home from work today and booted up. It's likely that a reboot fixed the problem, even though I had been tweaking the sound settings last night (without rebooting). Here's what I had done in the last couple of hours: played arond with the Alsa config tools, etc. Changed my video drivers to nvidia->nv->nvidia, and turning off the power management tool. Unfortunately I can't pinpoint what ultimately solved the problem.

If anyone else has a HP DV2000 Ubuntu 7.04 and runs in the same problem of no sound, try going back to the default display drivers and turn off the power management utility. Then use alsamixer and make sure everything looks good. Reboot. Other than that, I can't think of anything I did that ultimately solved the problem.

I'll be using Ubuntu regularly until Vista SP1 is released. It would be nice if Ubuntu could recognize both cores. I initially installed AMD_64, but there was no Flash utility available for youtube. So back to i386. Otherwise I would have stayed and attempted to get the AMD TurionX2 working as it should.

Cheers!

One more thing, I heard the newer builds of Alsa work better with the DV2000. Will newer builds of Alsa ever become available through updates so that I don't have to go through the hoops of recompiling?

From this I can only assume kernel/driver updates will filter in.

I have no idea what the schedule for the ubuntu developers is. You can probably find more info on releases and patches at the Ubuntu site. Glad you got it sorted.
Good luck. ;-)

This problem occurred again. This morning I pulled the battery and plug for a couple of minutes and that fixed the problem. I found the link below and it mentions something about a windows session. Well I had just been booted into Vista prior. Very strange.

Also I put in new Also drivers as per this link. But that was last night. This morning, no sound. Unplug, take out battery, and the sound it back up and running.

That's strange, the two OS's should be interacting with the hardware independently. I'll have to do some digging to wrap my head around that one. I've never heard of Windows shutting down hardware at that level. I'll be back when I have more info. Glad you've got it working, even with the "work around".
Good luck. ;-)
