Sound not working properly in Ubuntu

I can't seem to get the sound working as it should. I followed http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthre...7&page=2&pp=10 this thread to see if I could get it working, but if I try to start esd i get "/dev/dsp: No such file or directory". Any ideas of what I can do?

/dev/dsp is the standard device for sound. You have 2 choices:
-Link your current working device to /dev/dsp.
-Specify for all audio programs your current working device.
