sound module issues

I am runnind Debian testing and am having some isseus with the sound card. I have tried two differant sound cards and gotton basically the same error. The cards were SoundBlaster AWE64 and SB Live!

I am rinning kernel 2.6.9 with the newest version of module init tools. My error is this:

/sbin/modprobe: unrecognized option `--ignore-install'
Usage: /sbin/modprobe [-fhswvV] modulename ...
-f (or --force) forces a module unload, and may crash your
machine. This requires the Forced Module Removal option
when the kernel was compiled.
-h (or --help) prints this help text
-s (or --syslog) says use syslog, not stderr
-v (or --verbose) enables more messages
-V (or --version) prints the version code
-w (or --wait) begins a module removal even if it is used
and will stop new users from accessing the module (so it
should eventually fall to zero).
WARNING: Error running install command for snd_pcm
WARNING: Error inserting snd_sb16_dsp (/lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/sound/isa/sb/snd-sb16-dsp.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting snd_sbawe (/lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/sound/isa/sb/snd-sbawe.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

after executing that my lsmod looks like this:

Module Size Used by
snd_opl3_lib 8296 -
snd_sb_common 13416 -
snd_mpu401_uart 6120 -
snd_rawmidi 17888 -
snd_timer 20876 -
snd_ac97_codec 69936 -
snd_page_alloc 7440 -
snd_util_mem 3144 -
snd_hwdep 6468 -
snd 41332 -
soundcore 6816 -

The reason the only modules that are loaded is sound is because i am running a custon-compiled kernel on a slow computer. I need all the performance i can get so i compile all device modules that i can into the kernel.

I have spent far to long working on this and have no idea what is going on... HELP!

I have alsa installed and i cannot build the module directly into the kernel.

The wierd thing is that it worked 2 days ago. KDE could play sounds but MIDI and XMMS were not working.

building into the kernel means recompiling your kernel....

as far as alsa is concerned did you download alsa utilities.....

if u did then install it and run

#alsaconfig...

(read the documentation)
