Sound mandrake 10

I'm tri-booting mandrake 10, Fedora core 2, and windows XP. I can't get my sound card working on Mandrake 10. It works fine on Fedora core 2. The 2 distros are also using the same driver (I think, the name is the same snd-intel8x0). When I try to run KDE's sound system program (under mandrake) and click test sound I get this:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

My soundcard is an nvidia nforce intergrated. here's the info hardrake gives me

Vendor: ‎Nvidia Corporation

Alternative drivers: ‎ali5455:i810_audio:nvaudio

Bus: ‎PCI

Bus identification: ‎10de:6a:1509:904d

Location on the bus: ‎0:6:0

Description: ‎nForce2 Audio Codec Interface

Module: ‎snd-intel8x0

I removed /.asoundrc (which is a file another tutorial told me to create) so now i get this:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
