sound issues -- alsaconf claiming not to see any cards

I am attempting to get sound working on my laptop, which is an IBM thinkpad X40. Sound has worked in the past with other distros (SuSE), but I am now using Gentoo. This is the only real problem that I have not been able to fix with a few weeks of RTFM-ing. I usually like to find out the answer to the problem myself, but I seriously cannot find any guides to help alleviate this problem.

I believe I have compiled the correct option into the kernel, lspci -v says:
Code:
0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
        Subsystem: IBM: Unknown device 0558
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
        I/O ports at 1c00
        I/O ports at 18c0 [size=64]
        Memory at d0100c00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512]
        Memory at d0100800 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
I have compiled the "CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0" kernel option, which I believe is the correct option for this card. However, running alsaconf causes it to say "No supported PnP or PCI cards found", where I know my card is a PCI device. I have run /etc/init.d/alsasound stop at this point, as the alsasound program recommends.

Usually I have something to work with, but in this case, I am completely lost. I have been without sound for nearly a month now. Please help me

Thanks for reading, even if you don't know what's wrong.

Alsa likes modules so it can load them. Did you compile them in kernel previously when sound was working or were they modules?

I have always compiled everything into the kernel when I can. When sound was working, I had the sound driver compiled into the kernel, but I'm not sure if I was using alsa or oss. I will try compiling my sound driver as a module and see if that helps.
