Sound is Choppy

I am running Debian Woody. Kernel 2.4.22. When I play MP3's (regardless of the software) or even system sounds tend to distort and drop out when there is heavy system activity. I have played around with all the settings in the controll center to no avail. I have a soundblaster live value card. What can I do to fix this? I dont remember it happening on other systems that I owned with much less power. Currently I am running AthlonXP 1700 w/512 megs of DDR2700.
