Question Sound in Redhat 8.0

Hi ALL !! ,

Need Help !!

Yesterday only i have Installed Redhat 8.0 . The INstallation was successful. Every thing is working fine except Sound and Modem.

1. Regarding Sound :

a) I not get the startup music after i logged into RH8 Bluecurve environment. It was the same whether i opted for Gnome,KDE or WindowMaker.

b) I tried to play some Mp3z, Audio CDs from XMMs and KDE media player , but no use. Even i was unable to add the songs to palylist editor in XMMS.

c) But Strange thing is , when i have tested from the preferences Panel , Test Sound was successful. Even i ran sndconfig , it detected the Audio Card , it is intel Ac'97 and sample clip was audible.

2. My Modem is Internal , and so it failed to Detect.

But previously i was running redhat 7.3 ,Every thing was perfect.
i would like to tell , i did not upgrade to redhat 8.0 , but i reinstalled the whole.

Thanx in Advance,

kishore.

Due to lawsuit concerns RedHat did not include any MP3 code in RH8. Never fear, an RPM install later and it's back...

Don't know if that's your entire problem or not but a good place to start at least.

By the way, going on a bit further on this I suggest you to use ogg vorbis format files instead of mp3 :
- better quality for less space
- XMMS and most of apps supporting that format already

Have fun ;o)

By Default, RH8 doesn't start the sound server at startup-
you need to enable that from the sound option off of the preferences. From there, it will enable the sound, and the ability to play ogg, and mp3
