sound - good & bad
When logging into KDE you get the default little sound ditty which I guess is a wav file playing via the artsd server. Well from the beginning, this sound was pretty bad with a bunch of static. I mean you can hear the tune but it sounds like a poorly tuned radio station.
In the beginning, I didn't worry about this. I was (and still am) a newbie and was thrilled that I even got Linux (MDK 8.1) working on my dual boot Win98SE machine.
Ok, that's the "bad sound" issue.
The "good sound" issue is that music CDs play fine.
Now that I've done a little (very little) tweaking to get a few things working right, including my mouse wheel, I'd kinda like to get this sound problem fixed. I was fooling around in the Arts Builder program over the weekend and it was producing the same scratchy-static sounds I hear at start-up so it wasn't much fun. (If ya can't have fun, what's the point?)
I did a search here and read through a few dozen threads and posts but didn't see my exact problem.
In my Windows Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers, I see these entries. (I have an integrated sound card)
MPU-401 Compatible
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
Wave device for voice modem
It seems to me that there ought to be some little line of text I can edit in some file but I don't have any idea what or where.
Thanks for any help on this.
