Sound doesn't work in XFree86
I've installed the ALSA drivers, and they work fine outside of Xwindows, but when I enter xwindows, either through startx, gdm, or kdm, the sound stops working. The very odd thing is that if I exit Xwindows and go back to the command prompt, the sound starts working again!
I've done a cat /proc/interrupts, and I don't see any IRQ conflicts. lsmod shows all the appropriate drivers, but with one (obvious) difference, and that is the presence of the fglrx driver, which is needed for my display. Here's the output:
Module Size Used by Tainted: P
snd-pcm-oss 39044 0 (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss 12856 1 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
fglrx 148424 9
snd-emu10k1 70192 1
snd-pcm 61888 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-emu10k1]
snd-timer 11112 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-hwdep 4288 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-util-mem 1376 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-rawmidi 14048 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-ac97-codec 30436 0 [snd-emu10k1]
snd-seq-device 4316 0 [snd-emu10k1 snd-rawmidi]
snd 27820 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-hwdep snd-util-mem snd-rawmidi snd-ac97-codec snd-seq-device]
soundcore 3300 6 [snd]
No applications are using the sound, aside from the esd daemon. (Which ironically works outside of Xwindows as well!) I've been working at this for at least a week now, and I'm finally at my wits end. Any help?

Did you notice that little blurb at the end of the ALSA install about the mixer levels? Fire up the volume controls and I'll bet all the sliders are bottomed out.

No, the sliders are fine. Along with the permissions, and the other minor problems that plague the first time ALSA installation. This is the output of aplay and a sound file, which would normally work without Xwindows.
$ aplay 10pins.wav
Playing WAVE '10pins.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 22050 Hz, Mono
aplay: pcm_write:999: write error: Input/output error
Even mp3s work outside of Xwindows, but not within. The real oddity that occurs with MP3s is that they never leave the 0:00 mark when played.
I also found that anything sent to /dev/dsp also returns an Input/Output error. Argh.
