Sound does not work well in Packard Bell EasyNote

Hello all

I've a Packard Bell EasyNote which sound card identifies as:

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

My Kernel is : 2.6.27-7-generic

My Kubuntu 8.10beta loads the module snd_hda_intel at boot time and I can hear sound and use the mixer. But when I plug earphones or loudspeakers every sound stops to work. I need to reboot the computer or to execute 'alsa force-reload'.

I've tried with module snd_atiixp but then sound does not work at all.

Any clues or ideas?

It sounds like it's triggering the headphone jack sense feature of the sound card, but not recognizing when the headphones are being disconnected. If that's correct, it should be a control that you can see with the amixer command (something like "amixer -c 0 sget 'Headphone Jack Sense'").

This is a little old, but maybe it's more helpful:
