Sound device missing after building new kernel

I recently tried to rebuild my kernel and afterwards I now start up x and get the error message:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Note that I am not using the newly built kernel, I am stillusing the old one that was working. Im assuming that the building process must have acciendly erased something. Thanks for any help.
