After logging in I get the following message:
'Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Invalid argument)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.'

It worked fine since a while ago
None of the multimedia applications works anymore. I get errors like:
'Alsa device had an error' (Totem)
'Can't open audio' (xmms)
When I start xmms from Konsole I get errors like

ALSA lib conf.c:2821snd_config_hook_load) /etc/alsa/cards/aliases.conf may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it

ALSA lib pcm.c:1959snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM default definition (id: default, value: cards.pcm.default)
Any help would be appreciated
