Sound Card Probs

Here is the error I get when I try to play a mp3 on RH9:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Resource temporarily unavailable)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I downloaded the RPM to allow RH to play mp3's...but now I get this message. I also can't play CDs but it gives no message, all it does is not play.

If you are getting other kinds of sounds like the login and can play wav files then try comfiguring your xmms input and output plugins. Eventhough wav are not playing in xmms that may due to input plugin not seleted try options->sound and configure as suited.

have you tried running sndconfig? It should help at least to identify what kind of card you have. It might also help to let everyone know the kind of machine you are running--someone may have run into this before...

well, i can now play literally 2 seconds of an MP3 before the player freezes. My system is 1.5 ghz AMD Athlon XP, AC 97 Sound Card, Nvidia GForce 4 MX, RedHat 9 latest kernel.

O, and where is this sndconfig??
