sound card problems
 

Hello:
Thanks for your time and I apologize with you because the english isn't my native language.
I have problems with my sound card, I have a c-media CMI8738 model and actually I use Fedora Core 2. I can´t hear any sound, but FC 2 recognize my sound card correctly. I realize that there is sound but the volume is so low that I can't listen music. I raise the volume in the speakers and with KMIX but I continue with the problem.
What can I do?

hi cokebola, welcome to lq. have you tried alsamixer? open a terminal, or konsole and type

alsamixer

it's not as user friendly as kmix, but may give you more configuration options.

Do you by chance also have Kamix installed as well?
Sometimes the settings on that mixer will override Kmix.

Hi I follow your advice, I use alsamixer, but I continue with the same problem, the volume is so low and futhermore the music sounds terrible.
Then, my question is what is KAMIX and it's necessary to solve my problem?

Kamix is just an additional mixer application (somewhat different functionality) which can be run in KDE, and it is sometimes the case that BOTH Kamix and Kmix are installed on the same desktop. To check if you have Kamix just open your Run Command dialog box and type in "kamix" [minus quotes].

Does it now appear in your desktop panel as a mixer icon (just like Kmix)? Open it if present and attempt to adjust/unmute the master volume control.

Here's something else....

I've attached a couple of screenshots of my actual Kmix settings. Now be warned that they may NOT work at all on your system as there are many variables and differences between soundcards and speakers. I run just a simple SB Live and Tri-speaker set-up.

However, it may be of some assistance to see a basic running set-up.

Thanks, but your advice do not work with my sound card. Today, I am trying to compile the kernel, but when I run make xconfig and appear the window, I can't understand because the text was in Symbols, like circles, well, I closed the window and I saw a message that says:
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root, the I read the mail and this text attract my attention:
Errors running install command:
sound_slot_1 : 4 Time(s)
That message is important?
And What about the rare symbols when I run xconfig??

I have the C-Media CMI8738 on and ASUS AM7266 motherboard. I just get a bunch of static. I feel your pain.
I'm trying to fix this today, but no early luck so far.
