Sound card problem

On my Asus A8V-VM mobo, when I use the on board via sound card I get a high pitched shrill sound along with the music. This problem persisted across all distros and irrespective of adjusting mixer controls in alsamixer. So i decided to use a spare PCI sound card Cirrus Logic's CS4281. I have disabled the on-board sound controller through the bios settings and ran alsaconf which showed cs4281 only. Upon reboot I get no sound. How to rectify this ?
